My Life Lately (Mid-January to Mid-February)

Mileage for January 2015:Β 44.86km

Mileage for February 2015 (so far):Β 4.94 km

Mileage for #100DaysofMiles: 48km/161km (30miles/100miles)

Mileage for #2015in2015: 50km/1623km (31miles/1008miles)

Unfortunately, I’ve fallen off the wagon when it comes to weekly updates. Sad, I know, but that seems to happen. I do things for a few weeks, lose interest. It’s like I have ADHD or something.

Anyway, the rest of January was pretty low-key. I continued to run (at least until it started snowing, and never stopped) and even got my fastest 5k time in about a year! (36mins!) It all started when I went out for a run with 2 other ladies. I find when I run with other people that my next few runs really pick up the pace. I tend to get lazy when I run by myself, so having people there to push me to do more really helps my speed.

That WAS my fastest time, and then I went for a run and surprised myself with another fast 5k (which is currently my PB for the year), and there was even a big hill halfway through, and I managed to power up it, AND still maintain a good pace!

I kept up with yoga, and decided to make it my journey to take pictures of my progress as I went along. I fell off that band wagon as soon as I stopped running unfortunately, so I only have 1 or 2 pictures. But I’m definitely going to attempt to practice twice a week for now.

Then the snow started. We had 3 large storms dump 30cms each over a span of a week. Needless to say, I did nothing but shovel, and watch it snow for that time period.

How I felt after all that shovelling.
How I felt after all that shovelling.

I drove to Halifax during one of the lulls in the storms, as I had to go to a funeral, but unfortunately, my friend and I ended up getting snowed in anyway, and couldn’t make it 😦 I did get to spend some quality time with her and her pup Dawson!

Halifax got mostly freezing rain during that storm…However, I got home, and this is what I came to. Looking it up online, I saw we got close to 125cms of snow in about a week and a half. NOT COOL MAN, NOT COOL!

We found out on February 6th, that MrRBW’s sister had a little baby girl! And it was on his father’s birthday! I would post a picture of the baby, but seeing as it’s not my child, I don’t want to be spreading pictures of an infant without permission. But all I can say is SHE’S ADORABLE FOR A NEWBORN! I’m happy to say that baby and Mama are home safe and sound, and there were no complications. I’m more excited than MrRBW as it’s my first niece (and technically, his too)! However, MrRBW is certain that he will only see that child a few times in her lifetime. But I’d like to make more of an effort, but we shall see in the coming years.

On Sunday, we celebrated my dad’s birthday by going out to dinner, and then eating cake back at home. It was great to spend some time with my family, and celebrate another year with them. This also happened:

You'd think she was going to get fed or something....

I counted out the weeks to my first 5k race of the year (April 19, 2015!) and realized, that if I want a PR, I should definitely start training now, so I’m using a mixture of the HighStride App and Coach Jenny Hadfield’s Intermediate 5k training regime. I ran 4.94km yesterday on the treadmill, and did well up until about the 20min mark, and then I started to die out which isn’t so bad when I hadn’t been running for 2 weeks. It certainly wasn’t my fastest run, but I’m only beginning πŸ™‚Β I’m making it my goal, that this round for training, I’m really going to make an effort to crosstrain by hopefully swimming, or using the stationary bike at the gym.

Anyway, that’s my life lately! Hopefully, I’ll get back on track and continue with my “Week in Review” posts πŸ™‚

Week in Review (January 5-11)

Another week in the books! The weather has been terrible lately, but I’m proud of myself because I still got out there and ran (only 1 gym run last week!)

Mileage for this week: 15.91km

Mileage for #100DaysofMiles: 27km/161km (17miles/100miles)

Mileage for #2015in2015: 27km/1623km (17miles/1008miles)

MONDAY

It was insanely cold and blustery (60km/hr gusts!!), so I decided that instead of getting hypothermia/frostbite I would run inside at the gym (this is the day I found out that my gym pass was expiring the next day…WHOOPS!). I’ve decided to make it my goal to run at least 5k 3 times a week when I’m not training for a race. After my run, I came home, did some yoga to stretch out (I’ll do a post about my favourite yoga videos, I also have a pinterest board for yoga!) I’ve been following (but have been slacking) Yoga With Adrienne’s 30 Days of Yoga Challenge, so that’s one of the workouts I did after a general yoga for runners video. After, I tried something new for supper…and lemme just say, it was delicious! πŸ˜€

TUESDAY

First night back at ladies’ curling! We’ve been on a losing streak lately (although we’ve all been making some pretty wicked shots!) so hopefully the new year will bring new chances to win! I was exhausted when I got home so into bed I went with Ghost and it was snuggle time!

WEDNESDAY

It was freezing cold out (a balmy -16C), but thankfully no wind, so I decided that I would bundle up and run with Ghost outside. I had to wear: long sleeve shirt, zip-up hoodie, jacket, toque, neckwarmer, mittens, lined running leggings, pants, and my Saucony Gortex Trail shoes. I was warm, but I felt like the Michelin Man…Ghost seemed fine, but we had to stop a couple of times and take out the melted icy-snow from between the pads of her feet 😦 So I’ve decided no more runs with me unless it’s 0C or higher. The poor thing would also stand on 3 legs at the lights or crosswalks while we waited. I felt terrible! After that run I decided to look into lighter but warmer running jackets (I found a good down-filled jacket that was on sale at Joe Fresh! It’s not meant for running, but it does the job!), as I felt huge and sluggish. I was sad, because I used mapmyrun to map out my run, but I forgot a part of it when I got out there, so I didn’t get my full 5k in 😦 After that run, I worked 3-11, where I got to spend a large portion of my night at Tim Horton’s while one of the youth was at cadets. I got to eavesdrop on old people, which is fun, but I’m fairly certain they were all hard of hearing, so it was also quite loud.

THURSDAY

Not much to report. I worked 3-11 again. It snowed. A LOT. So it was a pretty terrible drive home, but I made it. I also had to prepare for my night shift on Friday night, so I stayed up until about 3:30 am.

FRIDAY

I woke up to a nasty, sleety day. I decided against running outside as the weather consistently got worse, so I prepared myself for another run at the gym. I even got a treadmill workout all planned out from fitnessandfeta! (I have another pinterest board for running). But, alas, when I arrived at the gym, it was actually closed, so I didn’t get to do anything that day! 😦

I've never tried this workout, but I assumed it was going to be hard as Hell, but very rewarding.
I’ve never tried this workout, but I assumed it was going to be hard as Hell, but very rewarding.

SATURDAY

Consisted of sleeping. I was going to run, but I can’t remember why I didn’t. Probably the weather and unplowed sidewalks. It obviously was an eventful day if I can’t even remember what I did! HA HA Oh wait! I had my first Yoga for Runners class! It was a great way to stretch out, and I must say I really do enjoy holding poses for longer to get an even better stretch. I don’t know about holding hard poses (ahem, plank) for longer, but when it comes to restorative yoga definitely a must! When I got out it was very snowy.

SUNDAY

I was going to get up and run with GRC, but I looked outside, and at the sidewalks, and decided that I wasn’t going to take my chances, and waited until later to run. I wore my new down-filled jacket and was snuggly and warm! However, I should’ve wore an extra layer on my legs, as they went numb very quickly, and a neckwarmer/scarf to cover my cheeks. I told a friend I ran 6.4k outside, and because of the slush in places when I got home I wanted to lay down, but it was too cold outside so I didn’t. Β Part of my run was a slight downhill, but because my run was an out and back run, when I turned around I had to run uphill in slushy, soft snow, so needless to say I ended up walking parts until I could see bare sidewalk again. It was frustrating to say the least. Not to mention, snow kept piling up in the tread of my trail shoes so I was getting frustrated with knocking that out too. I’m glad I got out there, but I definitely hate that aspect of winter running. But I try to remember that every tough run means an easy one is coming soon.

That was my week! I’m hoping I can get 3 runs in this week too, so wish me luck that the weather remains good.

Week in Review (December 29, 2014-January 4, 2015)

Another week is finished…I thankfully didn’t work as much this week, so I got to recuperate with MrRBW and Ghost and my family, as well as ring in the New Year with a good friend and her dog.

Mileage for this week: 13.19kms

Mileage towards #100DaysofMiles: 8.71km/161kms (5.41miles/100miles)

Mileage towards #2015in2015: 8.71km/1623kms (5.41miles/1008miles)

MONDAY

I got a run in (and took a runfie). I’ve definitely got some bronchitis/asthma-like symptoms going on still especially when I run outside, but I still enjoyed the run either way. Ghost also joined me. She’s been doing so well since we bought a harness and new leash for her. She still gets super-excited when meeting other dogs (she assumes all dogs want to automatically play with her, so she tends to lunge forward at them to sniff and greet), but she’s improved leaps and bounds since we first adopted her.

TUESDAY

I’m skipping this day. Nothing interesting that I can remember happened…Other than going out for supper with my family and then seeing the Hobbit in 3D. Let’s just say, I laughed extremely hard at the trolls bashing head first into brick buildings. And also Radagast the Brown is my spirit animal.

WEDNESDAY

Ah…New Year’s Eve day…We woke up to it snowing. Which is pretty in it’s own right, but when you have plans to drive 2hrs (and considering Nova Scotia’s lack of snow removal the last few years) it’s not a welcomed sight. Thankfully it stopped, so MrRBW, Ghost and I prepared to venture to Halifax to ring in the New Year with UniBestie1 and her beautiful dog Dawson. I was a little weary at first because Ghost is quite overbearing, overly excitable, while Dawson is the opposite. But thankfully, it all ended up fine. Ghost put Dawson in his place (he kept trying to steal her food. She was having none of that), and they played happily. Unfortunately, Ghost did end up humping Dawson multiple times (we think out of excitement and possible anxiety), but Dawson accepted his fate and moved on. We celebrated New Years by eating a ton of delicious food, drinking some amazing wine (Yellow Tail Moscato, and Moselland Ars Vitis Riesling), and playing Mario Party, Mario Cart, and watching Jem and the Holograms. We went to bed early because UniBestie1 had to work in the morning. Unfortunately, no one (including the dogs) slept well that night, as the people next door were yelling until about 3am, and there was also a domestic dispute around that time. All in all, it was a great way to spend New Years.

THURSDAY

I participated in the GRC Resolution 5k Run. When we started it was below 0 and snowing and then it warmed up considerably and the sun came out, so unfortunately I was over dressed. I thought I was going to die near the end as I was so overheated, and my breathing was suffering…but there was an awesome reward of chili and other delicious food! That evening, we headed to Mom and Dad’s for a ham dinner, which was delicious (my mother really outdoes herself with her cooking!). After sufficiently stuffing ourselves, we came home to vegetate in our food comas.

FRIDAY

It snowed a nice pretty fluffy snow. MrRBW was able to capture a great photo of the sun shining on the tree out front. Unfortunately, but the end of the day, it had gotten quite blustery, so the snow was blowing around and causing some nasty drifts 😦

SATURDAY

Back to the daily grind. I worked 8am-4pm. Thankfully, we got to take some youth to the gym, so I got a good treadmill run in. My calves were burning though as I used some running shoes I haven’t used in awhile (Saucony Grid 5’s).

SUNDAY

Not much to report, I worked 10-10 so my day was surrounded by work related things. It was nasty weather though, and I almost hit a deer on my drive home. Other than that uneventful πŸ™‚

Week in Review (Dec 22-28, 2014)

This week really consisted ofΒ A LOT of 12 hr shifts, so my week has been reaaaaaallly boring, unfortunately…

MONDAY

Monday was one of my glorious days off, and MrRBW and I went to my parents’ for a lobster dinner (oooo, fancy, I know!). There was an ulterior motive from my parents concerning this dinner-they wanted us to help them shell lobster for Christmas Eve seafood chowder. Either way, we got free lobster!

TUESDAY

MrRBW and I headed out (separately) to finish off our Christmas shopping (yeah, we might be slight procrastinators…). Of course, the stores were complete hell-holes. Either way, the gifts were bought! In the evening, I, again, headed over to Mom & Dad’s, but this time it wasn’t to eat (although, I know I did lots of that haha) specifically, but rather, to decorate my grandparents’ Christmas tree, and to decorate sugar cookies. When I got home, MrRBW had put up our Christmas tree (about time!) I’ll be doing a separate post about Christmas (I’ll link it when it’s done), so the pictures will be up there.

WEDNESDAY

And so started my 3-day stretch of 12hr days…It was pretty uneventful day at work. The most noteworthy things were:

  1. I went to my first Catholic Christmas Eve ceremony (I’m actually Protestant, even though I’m not a practicing Christian). Not as long and as boring as I had thought.
  2. MrRBW pulled a slight prank on me…I asked him to bring me some of the seafood chowder. He said he was going to be bringing me some canned chicken noodle soup. When he arrived, he handed me a bouillon cube, and a potato and said, “some assembly required”. I, of course, laughed. Then, he gave me the actual container of seafood chowder.

THURSDAY

Christmas Day…we got up early, and headed to Mom and Dad’s in order to open gifts before I had to go to work. Then, I spent 12hrs gorging myself on chocolate, and baked goods…

This explains my sentiments exactly about Christmas time...
This explains my sentiments exactly about Christmas time…

FRIDAY

My last day of my 3-day stretch, and I was exhausted. Not much to report here, other than I gorged myself on so much food, I’m surprised I could move…

SATURDAY

Another glorious day off. Although I was tired, and wanted to enjoy my time off, I picked myself up, and went for an almost 4k run with Ghost. I felt like crap, due to the baked good still lurking in my system, but dear Lord, I know it did me good, because I feel so much better!

SUNDAY

I worked another 12hr shift. Not much to report, other than the conversation that happened below between me and MrRBW.

Can you tell we've been listening to Game of Thrones on Audible?
Can you tell we’ve been listening to Game of Thrones on Audible?

And that’s the basic gist of my last week. I’m now off until January 3rd, so hopefully, I’ll get some much needed rest, and perhaps some more reading, and writing in!

Week in Review (Dec 15-21, 2014)

So i thought I’d give you my week in review. I unfortunately was sick with a viral throat infection pretty much the entire week.

MONDAY

I was sick as a dog. Not gastro sick, but I could barely talk and I was so exhausted, I laid on the couch. Unfortunately, I had to give up an 8hr shift because of it, but I know if I had I would’ve been completely miserable, and by the end would’ve passed out on the couch from being so exhausted.

TUESDAY

I was supposed to go to a curling Christmas closing. I went to the grocery store to pick up the food I needed to make my potluck baked spaghetti, but that small excursion left me so exhausted, I came back, sat on the couch, and didn’t move until almost 8pm.

WEDNESDAY

By Wednesday I was feeling almost normal, so MrRBW and I made it out into the world to deliver a gift (see below) to the UPS store in order for it to be sent to his family in Ontario.

MrRBW's wrapping job for a gift being sent to his family...
MrRBW’s wrapping job for a gift being sent to his family…

I did get to take this selfie (see below) and if you follow me on InstagramΒ you probably saw it with the caption “Pom Pom powers activate!” My mother informed me a couple days later that as a child, I absolutely HATED pom poms as a child and refused to wear them. My how things have changed.

THURSDAY

I was feeling antsy, so Ghost (my lovely dog) and I headed out for a run. Although, it probably wasn’t the best idea, as when I got home I was coughing up a storm. I did get a (slow) 3.83k in around the area. But that alone wiped me out.

FRIDAY

I went to my Mom and Dad’s to decorate gingerbread cookies and hangout with my mother. It’s almost nice to spend time with my mother πŸ™‚ She’s a Steeped Tea consultant, so she gave me some new hot chocolate flavours to try (Warm Cinnamon, and Mint) so MrRBW and I tried them that night (see picture below). My parents’ dog Cassie apparently really missed me because she was all over me!

SATURDAY

I worked 8-4pm, which was a good shift thankfully. Then, we went to Mom and Dad’s again to celebrate my grandmother’s 82nd birthday. Unfortunately, when they arrived at the house, Ghost took out both of them, so MrRBW had to take her home. It was a great evening with family.

SUNDAY

I worked 10-10, so my entire day was consumed with work. Not much to report.

Here’s hoping that I continue to to improve and get better, and I hope that I can actually sleep through the night. I’m also hoping to get a couple more runs in! I have high hopes! Hope you all had a great week!
